Professor David Frost reposed in the Lord

It is with deep sorrow, yet in the light and hope of the Resurrection, that we received the heart-breaking news of the repose in the Lord of our dear friend and former Principal of the Institute, Professor David Frost. He passed away peacefully last night, surrounded by his family.

A distinguished academic and Fellow of Sf John’s College Cambridge, a scholar of Shakespeare and English literature, and a gifted writer in his own right, David assumed the leadership of IOCS during a time of great difficulty, some twenty years ago. With steadfast resolve and unwavering dedication, he helped guide our Institute through turbulent waters into a period of renewed stability and purpose. Among the programmes he initiated at IOCS, THE WAY catechesis course remains one of the most important, being currently implemented in the Romanian Church and in an increasing number of Orthodox contexts.

During his decade-long tenure as Principal, he brought to IOCS—and to the wider Orthodox community in Cambridge—a deep love for the Church and a sincere, unwavering commitment to its mission but also an earnest openness to ecumenical dialogue. His leadership was marked by a profound faith in the renewing power of Christ, a resolute optimism, and an infectious joy. He also enriched the life of the Institute with his gift for storytelling and his warm, often mischievous sense of humour—gifts that enlivened personal encounters and Institute events alike. His letters and even his work emails were frequently small literary gems, cherished by their recipients.

We remain profoundly grateful to David for the vital role he played in shaping the story of IOCS, and for the legacy of grace, kindness, and good cheer that he leaves behind.

May the Risen Lord, through the prayers of Saint John the Evangelist – whose Feast Day we celebrate today – receive his soul into the fullness of His peace and joy, and into the company of His saints.

Memory eternal!
