Leading up to our celebratory event on the 30th of November, we are offering a 5-day iconography course in Cambridge led by Joseph Craveiro at Westminster College’s professional art studio.
This course is designed to immerse students in the fundamental and advanced techniques of Byzantine Iconography. Participants will explore various aspects of ancient techniques, such as painting with egg tempera and gilding with gold leaf, culminating in a comprehensive understanding and practical application of this ancient art form. At the end of the five days students will finish their own icon of the face of Christ along with a certificate awarded by the institute to serve as a recognition of their efforts and completion of the course.
All participants are welcome to join the celebrations on Saturday 30th November.
The cost of the course includes all materials necessary for the student to participate.
Payment for the course can be made at the bottom of this page.
The workshop will be led by the talented Joseph Craveiro.
“After earning my degree in Product Design from Brunel University, London, I embarked on a new academic journey, pursuing Theology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. It was during this time that I discovered my passion for Byzantine iconography, starting with beginner lessons that quickly evolved into an enduring commitment to the craft. Under the guidance of renowned iconographers Sophronia Kelpi and Dimitris Hatziapostolou, combined with extensive self-study, I mastered this ancient art form and began accepting commissions from clients across Europe. Upon returning to London, I dedicated myself to sharing my knowledge by offering beginner iconography lessons at the Cathedral of Agia Sophia in Bayswater, in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain. I also regularly hosted workshops at the Orthodox Church of Saint Nectarios in Battersea, passing on this sacred tradition to others.”
